A central topic of his work is high-quality CVD growth, particularly epitaxial growth on crystalline metal catalysts, with the goal of obtaining wafer-scale graphene, hBN and TMD layers with controlled orientation, grain structure and interfaces. More recently, his activities extend toward heterostructures and the broader concept of “2.5-dimensional materials”, where stacking, interfaces and controlled structural complexity become central.

Yukiko Yamada-Takamura (JAIST) works on epitaxial two-dimensional materials and their atomic/electronic structure, with a particularly distinctive activity in silicene and related elemental 2D systems grown on crystalline surfaces such as ZrB2. Her approach combines materials growth, surface science and electronic-structure characterization, often closely linked to theory. Recent activities also reach into structurally engineered 2D assemblies and moiré systems.

Kazunari Matsuda (Kyoto University): Matsuda’s group is strongly focused on the optical and quantum-optical physics of 2D semiconductors, especially excitons in TMDs and artificial van der Waals heterostructures. A major recent direction is moiré exciton physics, including single localized excitons, coherence, quantum emission and the possibility of using artificial moiré potentials as quantum-optical platforms.

Yasumitsu Miyata (NIMS): Miyata leads the NIMS 2D Semiconductor Group and focuses on high-quality synthesis, processing and device integration of 2D semiconductors, in particular TMDs. Current work includes controlled growth, strain engineering, defect characterization and device concepts, with examples ranging from WSe2 to direct integration of metallic NbSe2 contacts.

Tomoki Machida (University of Tokyo): Machida’s research is close to the quantum-device side of the Aachen activities. His group studies quantum transport in graphene and van der Waals heterostructures, including high-mobility graphene/hBN, quantum Hall physics, Josephson junctions, magnetic tunnel junctions, vertical devices and optoelectronics. He has also pioneered increasingly automated methods for identifying, transferring and assembling 2D crystals, including machine-learning-assisted and robotic approaches.

The workshop brought together colleagues from the Aachen Graphene & 2D Materials Center and a delegation of researchers from Japan working on graphene and 2D materials.
