To actively sustain this field, the BMBF has announced at the end of 2018 the funding line &#8220;Research for new microelectronics (ForMikro)&#8221;. &nbsp;&nbsp;Two PIs of the Aachen Graphene and 2D Materials Center, Max Lemme and Joachim Knoch, have each won  a granted project in the first call of this new funding scheme.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.ac\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BMBF-logo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-651\" width=\"207\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.graphene.ac\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BMBF-logo.png 305w, https:\/\/www.graphene.ac\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BMBF-logo-300x162.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201eForMikro\u201c\nsustains research on topics that have not yet been industrially exploited, but\nfor which there is a proven interest from industry. The goal is to accelerate\nthe transfer of creative ideas from knowledge-oriented research into new\ntechnologies in microelectronics. The projects won by Lemme and Knoch deal with\nresearch on innovative materials for applications in sensor technology and\nintegrated circuits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\ncoordinated by Lemme takes the name of NobleNEMS and contributes to research\nand education in the Aachen Graphene &amp; 2D Materials Center. The goal is to\ndemonstrate highly sensitive nanoelectromechanical sensors (NEMS) made of\ntwo-dimensional materials that include noble metals such as Platinum or\nPalladium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith NobleNEMS\nwe expect to improve significantly the sensitivity and the scalability of\nmembrane-based pressure sensors and microphones\u201d, says Lemme. \u201cIn the long run,\nI see also potential for applications of this technology in accelerometers,\nenvironmental sensors and infrared photodetectors.\u201d&nbsp; Together with RWTH, the project involves TU Dresden, the\nBundeswehr University Munich, and the companies Infineon, ATV, Witec and AMO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\ncoordinated by Knoch deals with post-silicon nanoelectronics. The aim is to\nexplore the full potential of SiGeSn \u2013 an alloy that contains silicon,\ngermanium and tin \u2013 for realizing transistors and integrated circuits. \u201cTo\nevaluate the potential of SiGeSn along the entire value chain, we will adopt a close\nfeedback-loop between material optimization and device design and fabrication\u201d,\nexplains Knoch.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\nhas the name SiGeSn nanoFETs and is based on a consortium formed by RWTH,\nForschungszentrum J\u00fclich, the Helmholtz-Zentrum\nDresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Stuttgart University and the Leibnitz Institute for\nInnovative Microelectronics (IHP). The project also involves the companies Aixtron,\nSiltronic AG, ROVAK &#8211; Flash Lamp Systems GmbH, GlobalFoundries and\nRohde&amp;Schwarz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two\nprojects contribute to the implementation of the German government&#8217;s High-Tech\nStrategy 2025 within the Framework Programme &#8220;Microelectronics from\nGermany &#8211; Driving Innovation in Digitisation&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microelectronics is a major driving force for innovation and digitalization, and a key tool to sustain the economic strength of Germany and Europe.
